Andrew Kovacs – From Chicago to Shodoshima

International Architectural Education Platform (SEKISUI HOUSE – KUMA LAB) offers the International Design Studio program where leading architects from across the globe are invited to teach design studios for one semester at the University of Tokyo. In the spring semester of 2021, we invited Andrew Kovacs, based in Los Angeles, USA, and Ensemble Studio based in Madrid, Spain, and Boston, USA. Kovacs’s studio explored the boundaries between architecture and art under the theme “Very Big Art” and five graduate students worked on their projects.

The entire semester of the studio was conducted remotely due to travel restrictions. Now with the ease of the restrictions, Kovacs will be visiting Japan, and we are pleased to organize this event. The event consists of presentations of student projects and a lecture by Kovacs.

During his visit to Japan, Kovacs will work with students from the University of Tokyo to reassemble his “CHICAGO MODEL Proposal for Collective Living II (Homage to Sir John Soane)” which was originally exhibited at the Chicago Architecture Biennial 2017. CHICAGO MODEL will be moved to Shinkenchiku Shodoshima House (planned and designed by Sunaki) and exhibited at Setouchi Triennale 2022.
