The recipient of a Fulbright Graduate Study\/Research Award and Fulbright-Hays DDRA grant, she is currently conducting her dissertation research on the history of water-related technology and space in the Japanese home as a visiting researcher at the Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo. Before beginning her Ph.D., Michelle received a Master of Architecture and a Master of Science in Architectural Studies from Washington University in St. Louis in 2015, where she was awarded the American Institute of Architects Medal for Excellence in All Efforts and Association of Licensed Architects Student Merit Award. Her thesis research examined the history of postwar Japanese new towns.
